What to Wear to a Kentucky Derby Party

The Kentucky Derby, in all its preppy and southern glory, is the kick-off to themed spring events where you’ll need more than a khaki suit to stand out. Don’t know where to start? We have you covered. Here’s our round-up of Derby essentials.

Nothing says derby like a bow tie. Keep it fun but in your color wheelhouse (most guys love navy) Opt for self-tie. You’re a man.

Navy Polka Dot Bow Tie, $49

Not a bow tie fan but want something different? Silk Knit or unlined ties are your next best bet.  Fun designs and colors are always a way to make it stand out a bit more.

Derby parties are usually in warm weather and usually semi-casual, and that means oxford shirts.  It’s a southern staple and will make sure you keep cool when the stakes are high.  Opt for white or ice blue.

Monti Ice Blue Oxford, $138

If you want something more modern, opt for a colored chino. Cream is safe but unique at the same time.

Stay away from the standard khaki and seersucker.  These julep-filled events will be flooded with them. Do you tend to run warm? Try a bright linen jacket to bring more color and texture to your outfit.

Bruno Red Windowpane Jacket, $448

Tobacco is having a moment right now but historically, it’s always been a versatile color. While in the brown spectrum, it’s dark enough to stand up to a multitude of colors but rich enough to work well for this year’s derby.
